doc. dr. Nataša Logar Berginc:
“The monograph brings into Slovene linguistics a more objective overview of the process of language acquisition, both in terms of identification of more difficult areas for students and in terms of what teachers correct. This research offers important guidelines for the design of new language resources and tools for Slovene, while its main part, i.e. the classification of student errors, is a good basis for further, more detailed, classifications of incorrect or inappropriate language use that will be made in further studies based on the Šolar corpus or other similar new corpora.”

The monograph provides an insight into some of the current research focusing on the preparation of data for and the design of bilingual lexicographic sources, typically dictionaries and language databases for Slovene. Contrastive research and projects based on monolingual or parallel text corpora are presented, which, at the same time, represent endeavours to design better quality language resources exploiting corpus evidence. The six contributing papers deal with the following micro-topics: a model for the compilation of a Japanese-Slovene collocations dictionary, the automatic reversal of a bilingual database for the purposes of a new Slovene-Dutch dictionary, and some collocation-related phenomena revealing pragmatic aspects of meaning analysis for the Slovene-English and Slovene-French language pairs.

The book consists of three pieces of research, conducted as part of the Communication in Slovene project. The first chapter presents Šolar, the first Slovene corpus of school texts. It is a large electronic collection of written texts, produced by students at different academic subjects in elementary and secondary schools across all Slovenian regions. The second chapter presents the findings of the survey conducted among teachers of Slovene and students at elementary and secondary schools. The survey investigated opinions, views and practices associated with the teaching of Slovene, and the use of information communication technology in the teaching of Slovene. The third chapter offers an extensive critical analysis of textbooks for Slovene, especially with regards to the contents related to communication and text genres.

The monograph presents the options for automatic extraction of two- and three-word phrases from a morphosyntactically annotated FidaPLUS corpus. The book will be particularly useful for those interested in which patterns should be used for automatic extraction of word phrases. In addition, the work addresses the question of which procedures to use so that syntactially meaningful phrases are obtained, rather than a sequence of lemmas. Due to its combination of corpus linguistics and actual problems of automatic processing of Slovene, the book is useful for both computer linguists and developers of language technologies for Slovene.
